A goal from Stuart Lamberton four minutes from time gave Dufftown a deserved victory against an ill-disciplined Inverness City side at a windy Westburn Park.
Dufftown manager Paul Lamberton made two changes to the side that was defeated by Islavale in midweek, out went Alan Gray and Lee McGregor to be replaced by Blair McDonald and William Siford.
Report of Inverness being forced to field an under-strength side proved to be unfounded with 8 of the side that defeated Dufftown 3-0 at Westburn Park in February taking to the field for the men from the Highland capital.
Inverness had the first chance of the match after just two minutes. Steven Sanderson found space inside the Dufftown penalty area but his angled effort was comfortably saved by Dufftown 'keeper Scott Riddoch.
Inverness had started the better side but Dufftown were gradually working their way back into the match and had a series of chances midway through the half that could have given them the lead.
After 23 minutes a free kick from Paul Lamberton found Andrew Ross at the edge of the Inverness penalty area. Ross rolled the ball into the path of Scott Cameron, the Dufftown midfielder's shot from 20 yards was parried by Inverness 'keeper Iain Young straigtht to Stuart Lamberton but Lamberton's 8 yard header into the wind lacked power and was easily held by 'keeper Young.
Just a minute later and Blair McDonald did well to knock a cross ball from the Dufftown left into the path of Stuart Lamberton but the Dufftown striker blazed the ball wildly over the bar from 8 yards out.
Blair McDonald created Dufftown's next chance after 26 minutes. The midfielder did well to deliver a cross into the Inverness penalty area which found Andrew Ross in complete isolation. Ross steadied himself before lashing in a 16 yard shot which was straight at 'keeper Young who comfortably saved Ross's effort.
William Siford was the next Dufftown player to have a chance after 31 minutes. The midfielder picked the ball up some 25 yards out before lashing in a left footed shot which visiting 'keeper Young did well to clutch at his top right hand corner.
Dufftown grabbed the opening goal after 37 minutes. Striker Andrew Ross was cynically brought down by Inverness defender Jamie Fraser - Fraser received a yellow card from referee Richard Riddoch but it could very well have been a red card as Fraser had appeared to deny Ross a goalscoring opportunity. From the resultant free-kick Stuart Lamberton slipped the ball to William Siford who drilled the ball across 'keeper Young and into the net to give the home side a deserved lead.
Dufftown had totally dominated the second part of the first half but conceded a needless penalty after 41 minutes to allow Inverness to get back on level terms. There seemed little danger when striker Michael MacKenzie broke into the Dufftown penalty area but Blair McDonald inexplicably tripped the Inverness striker leaving referee Riddoch with no option but to point to the penalty spot. Up stepped Jordan MacDonald to send home 'keeper Scott Riddoch the wrong way and bring Inverness back onto level terms.
Dufftown had one final chance to regain the lead in the first half. William Siford and Andrew Ross combined well before the latter created some space for himself before unleashing a 20 yard shot which flew just wide of Inverness 'keeper Iain Young's goal.
Into the second half and the pattern of Dufftown dominance was to continue with Inverness struggling to cope with the midfield due of Scott Cameron and Gary Simpson who were controlling the game.

Inverness had a half chance of their own after 70 minutes. Substitute Nile McNiven found himself some space inside the Dufftown penalty area before driving in a 16 yard shot which home 'keeper Scott Riddoch dealt with comfortably.
Dufftown's Peter Fraser created the best chance of the second half after 74 minutes. The defender advanced into the Inverness half before delivering an inviting cross onto the head of William Siford. The midfielder's header towards goal was powerful enough but it was straight at 'keeper Young who comfortably held the ball. Had Siford's header been to either side of the 'keeper then it would surely have been a goal.
Dufftown grabbed the winning goal that their play had deserved with just four minutes remaining. Andrew Ross took a short corner to Stuart Lamberton who was in space at the edge of the Inverness penalty area and the Dufftown captain lashed the ball high beyond 'keeper Young and into the roof of the net sparking scenes of celebration both on and off the pitch.
The final whistle was blown a short time later and the Dufftown, players, management and supporters celebrated a deserved victory against a side tipped by many as favourites to gain promotion this season. |
