Alan Shearer's 51st minute strike gave Dufftown their first win of the season at Forest Park.
Dufftown manager Paul Lamberton made three changes to the side that was defeated by Hall Russell United on Saturday. Out went Scott Riddoch, Alan Gray and Kris Geddes to be replaced by Andrew Ross, Gordon Stepien and Alan Shearer.
Dufftown started the match on the front foot and could have went ahead after just 4 minutes. Strong determined play by Scott Cameron saw the Dufftown midfielder eventually pick out Blair McDonald but his 18 yard effort flew over Burghead goalkeeper Andrew Payne's crossbar.
Scott Cameron was to prove to be influential for Dufftown throughout the match and created another chance for his side after 9 minutes. His delightful through ball found Alan Shearer in space, the striker ran through on goal, rounded 'keeper Payne but saw his weak left footed effort trickle wide of the 'keeper's right hand post with the Burghead defence watching on.
Just a minute later and play had transferred to the other end. A high looping corner was played into the Dufftown penalty area by Steven Ramsey where it was met by the head of Stephen Porter but the defender's effort was easily taken by Dufftown goalkeeper Andrew Ross.
Dufftown had another chance to take the lead after 17 minutes. Blair McDonald found Scott Cameron with a throw in and Cameron flicked the ball onto Stuart Lamberton. The Dufftown captain then hit a 20 yard volley just wide of the Burghead thistle goal.
Dufftown were in complete control of the match but seemed unable to make the vital breakthrough. After 32 minutes Alan Shearer did well with a fine breaking run down the Burghead right, he tried to find team-mate Lee McGregor but the ball was half cleared by the Burghead defence, it fell to William Siford who launched an absolute thunderbolt of a shot from 35 yards out but 'keeper Payne gathered the ball and the chance was lost.
Into the second half and Dufftown were to take the lead after 51 minutes. A superb defence splitting pass by Gordon Stepien allowed Alan Shearer the chance to run in on goal, this time the striker made no mistake, clinically drilling the ball beyond 'keeper Payne's left hand and into the net to give Dufftown a deserved lead.
Dufftown were completely dominating the match and really should have added to their advantage soon after opening the scoring. A short corner from Stuart Lamberton found William Siford in space and his excellent cross found Alan Shearer around 6 yards out but his header sailed over the bar when it looked easier to score.
Dufftown thought that they had doubled their advantage after 60 minutes. Lee McGregor did well down the right hand side before standing up an excellent cross which found William Siford who beat the Burghead defence to the ball before heading the ball over 'keeper Payne and into the Burghead net. Referee Alan Proctor, however, decided that Siford had pushed a Burghead defender and the goal was disallowed.
There was to be a chance for either side in the closing stages of the match. With 3 minutes remaining Dufftown's Alan Shearer again found himself clean through on goal, this time Shearer tried to chip the ball over the 'keeper but he got the effort all wrong and the ball drifted wide for a goal kick.
Burghead's final chance of the match was to come in the final minute. A long range shot from Wayne Cummings bounced in front of Dufftown 'keeper Andrew Ross who flapped somewhat but managed to divert the ball away for a corner.
The final whistle was blown a short time later and the Dufftown players could be pleased with their work and will hope this win will help create some momentum for the matches coming up. |
