Dufftown rounded off the season with a battling draw against Deveronside in heavy conditions at Westburn Park.
Late afternoon snow showers had caused some doubt as to whether the match would be played but a pitch inspection by match referee David Watt some 45 minutes before kick off time found that the pitch was playable and the match was given the go-ahead.
Co-managers Willie Duncan and Paul Lamberton were in the very unusual position of being able to name exactly the same starting eleven as that which started the match against Forres Thistle at the weekend.
Deveronside created the first chance of the match after 16 minutes. Full-back Ernie Milne did well down the Deveronside right, cutting in before firing in a 20 yard effort which drifted wide of Dufftown 'keeper Martin Taylor's left hand post.
A moment of madness from Dufftown 'keeper Martin Taylor then almost saw Deveronside open the scoring after 18 minutes. There seemed little danger when a long ball was played through the centre of the Dufftown defence but as the home defence waited for 'keeper Taylor to clear he could only kick the ball off of Deveronside's Craig Cowie before the ball landed just wide of Taylor's left hand post.
Deveronside were maintaining possession well without seriously troubling Dufftown and gradually Dufftown began to ease their way into the match.
Dufftown's main chance of the first half was to come after 37 minutes. An excellent driving run by Blair McDonald saw him do extremely well to dig out a cross to the back post where the ball eventually broke to Tam Hearns who saw his effort on target parried to safety by Deveronside 'keeper Neil Duncan.
Into the second half and again it was to be Blair McDonald who was to be the focal point of Dufftown's attacking efforts. Just one minute of the half had been played when the teenager picked the ball up some 30 yard out before unleashing a fine right footed effort that whistled just a couple of yards wide of Deveronside 'keeper Duncan's right hand post.
Deveronside then missed a glorious chance to open the scoring after 52 minutes. A corner kick was played in from the left by Ross Thompson who found Kevin Sopel in space inside the Dufftown penalty area, the striker's 10 yard header striking 'keeper Martin Taylor's crossbar before being cleared to safety.
Just a minute later and there was another escape for Dufftown. This time a corner from Ross Thompson found its way to Craig Cowie in space but his shot at goal was cleared off of the line by Blair McDonald and the danger was averted.
Dufftown were then denied a goal after 64 minutes. Striker Stuart Allan picked the ball up at the edge of the Deveronside penalty area before beating 'keeper Duncan with a fine angled shot - referee David Watt decided that Allan was offside however and awarded the free-kick to Deveronside.
Deveronside then opened the scoring with 15 minutes remaining. Substitute Scott Davidson did well down the Deveronside right before swinging over a delightful cross which was well finished from close range by John McLeay who was in the right place at the right time.
Dufftown refused to be downcast however and got the equaliser that their play deserved with just 4 minutes remaining. Excellent play from from Lee McGregor saw him force the ball through to Alan Shearer who showed good footwork inside the Deveronside penalty area before slotting the ball into 'keeper Neil Duncan's bottom right hand corner.
The final whistle was then blown on Dufftown's season just a few minutes later, a fighting performance and hopefully a taste of what's to come next season. |
