Dufftown clinched their first victory in 11 months with a crucial 2-1 win against Parkvale at a windy Findon Park.
Co-managers Willie Duncan and Rab Mulheron made two changes to the side that suffered defeat against Stonehaven last weekend. Out went Blair McDonald and Daryl McGregor to be replaced by Mark Sanderson and Alan Shearer who made his first start of the season.
Parkvale were to create the first chance of the match after 7 minutes. Midfielder Brian Spalding turning with the ball some 18 yards out before unleashing a shot which beat Dufftown 'keeper Martin Taylor but bounced to safety off of the post.
Just 5 minutes later and Parkvale were to create their second chance of the match. Wayne Barron found some space inside the Dufftown penalty area but he blasted his shot off Dufftown defender Peter Fraser and the chance was gone.
Dufftown were to create their first chance of the match after 14 minutes. Midfielder Alan Gray's through ball found Alan Shearer who was clean through on goal but home 'keeper Scot Knox did well, blocking Shearer's effort with his feet before the ball was eventually cleared behind for a corner.
Just a minute later and the first sign that Parkvale's discipline was to be a problem for them during the match. Brian Spalding and Dufftown's Gary Spence appeared to square up to each other and with Spalding appearing to raise his hands to Spence referee Scott McIntyre showed the Parkvale midfielder a yellow card.
Parkvale were to create another chance after 17 minutes. Wayne Barron did well to cross the ball into the Dufftown penalty area where he found Iain Penny who had a great chance with a free header but his weak effort was comfortably saved by Martin Taylor.
The first half then petered out with both sides struggling to master the windy conditions and defences coming out on top.
Into the second half and the match was to erupt after 53 minutes. Dufftown's Gary Ewen and Parkvale's Iain Penny went for a 50-50 challenge but the Parkvale midfielder leapt into Ewen with a shocking two-footed attack leaving the Dufftown defender writhing in agony. With the Parkvale bench laughing and praising their player for his actions referee McIntyre was left with no option but to show Penny a straight red card for violent conduct and reduce the home side to ten men.
This incident seemed to galvanise Dufftown and they took the lead on the hour mark. Superb link-up play between Stuart Allan and Alan Shearer allowed the latter to drive past several Parkvale defenders before delightfully knocking the ball beyond the onrushing home 'keeper Knox and into the net to give Dufftown the lead.
Just six minutes later and Dufftown thought that they had doubled their lead. Gary Spence ran straight through the Parkvale defence before squaring the ball to Mark Sanderson who had the simplest of tasks of knocking the ball into the empty net. Dufftown celebrations were cut short however, referee McIntyre blowing for offside despite Spence appearing to roll the ball back to Sanderson who appeared to be standing behind the Dufftown midfielder.
The second Dufftown goal was only delayed for another six minutes however. Again Gary Spence and Mark Sanderson linked up well, this time Sanderson was clearly onside and he unselfishly rolled the ball to Stuart Allan who had the easy task of rolling the ball into the empty net to the delight of the visiting players, management and support.
2-0 up against ten men who were arguing amongst themselves you would think that Dufftown were on easy street. Unfortunately things are never easy with Dufftown! Just two minutes after going two goals behind Parkvale pulled a goal back. Gary Spence took a shocking touch on the halfway line allowing Steven Young to waltz through the Dufftown defence before squaring the ball to Michael Thomas who slotted home from close range.
A nervous final 15 minutes ensued before referee McIntyre finally blew the full-time whistle amid scenes of celebration from the visiting players, management and support. Their first victory in 11 months and a much needed 3 points against the league's bottom side. |
