Dufftown slumped to a third straight defeat as two second half goals from Inverness City and a red card for Kevin Smith rounded off this season's Grill Cup campaign.
Co-managers Willie Duncan and Rab Mulheron made three changes to the side that started the match against Deveronside on Tuesday night. Out went Stuart Lamberton, Blair McDonald and Sanuk Stephen to be replaced by Peter Fraser, Alan Gray and Mark Sanderson.
The first chance of the match fell to the home side in the first minute. Dufftown's Kevin Smith was guilty of ball-watching allowing Inverness's Mark MacLennan the chance to shoot but Dufftown 'keeper Martin Taylor was equal to the task, saving the effort comfortably.
Mark MacLennan was to be the creator of the next chance after 8 minutes. He fired over an excellent ball into the Dufftown box that was only half-cleared by Daryl McGregor. The ball fell to Gary Miller who saw his shot, which seemed destined for the top corner, brilliantly saved by Martin Taylor.
MacLennan was causing the Dufftown defence all sorts of problems and after 25 minutes he released a defence splitting pass to striker Ross Thomson but he rather scuffed his shot and Dufftown 'keeper Taylor saved easily.
Dufftown's best chance of the first half was to come after 34 minutes. A long clearance by Martin Taylor was well controlled by striker Mark Sanderson who rolled the ball into the path of Stuart Allan who saw his powerful 18 yard effort pushed behind for a corner by home 'keeper Iain Young.
A slip from Inverness defender Keith Mason almost gifted Dufftown a chance after 38 minutes. The ball broke to Mark Sanderson who checked back and attempted to chip the goalkeeper when the best option was probably to drive towards goal and have an effort from close range.
Into the second half and Dufftown had a lucky escape after 53 minutes. Central defender Lee McGregor missed the ball and it allowed striker Nile McNiven the chance of a shot at goal, his effort beat 'keeper Taylor before striking the post and then bouncing into the arms of the grateful 'keeper.
Just 7 minutes later and Inverness again wasted a clear opportunity. Full-back Keith Mason saw his cross find Ross Thomson but the striker somehow shot wide when it seemed easier to score.
Dufftown's best chance of the second half was to come on 71 minutes. Stuart Allan and Gary Spence combined well allowing the latter to play a fine ball to midfielder Gary Ewen but his shot hit the side netting and the chance was gone.
The game was to erupt in controversy after 75 minutes. A through ball beyond the Dufftown defence saw two Inverness players in suspiciously offside looking positions. The assistant referee disagreed however and with the Dufftown defence posted missing Bruce McGraw kept his composure to slot beyond 'keeper Taylor.
Dufftown's Kevin Smith was obviously unhappy at the offisde decision not being given and was shown a straight red card before the match re-started for foul and abusive language towards the assistant referee.
Inverness clinched the victory in the final minute. A cross from Graeme Stewart on the left hand side found Jamie MacDonald who beat 'keeper Taylor and sealed the home side's win.
The match finished a short time later with the home side deserving of their victory and Dufftown knowing that they will have to raise their game when they host Islavale on Wednesday night. |
