Super League champions Banks O' Dee cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win over Dufftown in the Grill League Cup at Westburn Park.
Co-managers Willie Duncan and Rab Mulheron made three changes to the side that drew with Buckie Rovers on Wednesday night. Out went Alan Gray, Mark Sanderson and Stuart Allan to be replaced by Gary Ewen, Daryl McGregor and Adam Irvine.
Dufftown created the first chance of the match after 3 minutes. Captain Stuart Lamberton swung over a free-kick which was met by the head of Gary Spence but the midfielder's effort was comfortably saved by visiting 'keeper Grant Pennett.
The Dufftown goal was to have a narrow escape just a minute later. Banks O' Dee striker Richard White broke beyond the Dufftown defence and saw his shot parried by home 'keeper Martin Taylor. The striker then regained possession before shooting towards goal only for Stuart Lamberton to divert the ball off of the top of the crossbar and away for a corner kick.
Home defender Ian Cameron was to be booked after 29 minutes in controversial circumstances. The centre back had been off of the pitch receiving treatment for an injury when he was allowed back onto the park by the linesman. Referee Douglas Ross found this unacceptable however and booked Cameron for re-entering the field of play without permission from the referee.
The visitors were to take the lead just a minute later. A low corner to the front post by Ally Reid saw defender Robert Turnbull force the ball into the net from close range.
It was one-way traffic and the visitors almost doubled their lead after 34 minutes. Defender Ryan Dick did well down the right hand side before sending in a fine cross which was met by the head of Martin Foy who saw his header flash just over the Dufftown crossbar.
Home 'keeper Martin Taylor then kept his side in the match with a great double save after 37 minutes. An error by Stuart Lamberton saw Richard White have an effort well blocked by Taylor and with the ball only being partially cleared it broke to Richard Scaiffe some 25 yards out and his effort was expertly touched over the bar for a corner by Taylor.
Right on half-time and Taylor was to be the hero for the home side again. This time White and Foy combined well and the latter saw his low effort brilliantly saved by the diving Taylor.
Into the second half and the decisive minute of the match was to be the 60th minute. Home midfielder Gary Spence did well down the right hand side before firing over a cross to striker Adam Irvine. Irvine seemed to miss-time his run however and the ball bounced off of his head and away to safety. The visitors broke to the other end of the park and Martin Foy cut in from the right before placing his shot beyond Taylor to give his side a two-goal lead.
The scorer of the second goal was to be the creator of the third goal after 68 minutes. This time Martin Foy did well down the Banks O' Dee right before sending in a low cross to substitute Jack Strachan who slotted home from close range.
The final goal of the afternoon was to come with 9 minutes remaining. Defender Ryan Dick's free-kick was met by danger-man Martin Foy who beat 'keeper Taylor to the ball before heading into the unguarded net.
The referee blew the full-time whistle and Dufftown can be content with their afternoon's work, knowing that, ultimately, they were beaten by the better team. |
