Dufftown suffered a 6-2 reversal in their opening match of season 2009-2010 at Super League side Banchory St Ternan in the Grill League Cup.
Co-Managers Willie Duncan and Rab Mulheron handed competitve debuts to no fewer than seven players. Martin Taylor, Peter Fraser, Stuart Lamberton, Blair McDonald, Grant Darnley, Donald Poupard and Gary Spence all making their first starting appearances for the club.
Banchory started the match on the front foot and could have opened the scoring after just two minutes. Matthew Reid swung over a corner from the Dufftown right and Allan Ogston saw his header comfortably saved by visiting 'keeper Martin Taylor.
The opening goal was to come for Banchory after 14 minutes thanks mainly due to a mistake by Dufftown midfielder Peter Fraser. Fraser lost possession in midfield to Matthew Reid and the Banchory wide man fed Alan McRae who slotted the ball beyond Taylor to give the home side the lead.
Things were to go from bad to worse for Dufftown when the second Banchory goal arrived after 20 minutes. This time it was Dufftown's Blair McDonald who was culpable, losing possession to Matthew Reid who saw his powerful shot well blocked by 'keeper Taylor but in nipped Keith Horne to knock the rebound into the unguarded net.
Dufftown were finding it hard going against a side who had finished 5th in last season's Super League. Stuart Allan created Dufftown's first real chance after 36 minutes, linking up well with Gary Spence but just as the midfielder was about to shoot for goal in came a terrific saving challenge from Banchory defender Philip Watson and the chance had gone.
Banchory almost made it 3-0 after 39 minutes. This time a corner from Matthew Reid found Allan Ogston but his effort was blocked by a combination of Grant Darnley and the Dufftown goalpost.
Dufftown were to pull a goal back just two minutes later. Again Stuart Allan did well, this time to release Kevin Smith and the midfielder showed good composure to clip his effort beyond the advancing Banchory 'keeper Greg Sim and into the net despite the valiant attempt of Banchory defender Philip Watson to keep the ball out of his net.
Into the second half and the pattern of Banchory pressure was to continue. Substitute Andrew Courage had a great chance after 49 minutes when he burst through towards the Dufftown goal but he lacked composure and blazed his shot wildy past the post.
Just three minutes later and Allan Ogston combined with Courage only for the latter to sky his effort well over the crossbar when it looked easier to score.
There was a sense of inevitability about Banchory scoring again and the third goal duly arrived on the hour mark. A high ball was launched into the Dufftown box which 'keeper Taylor seemed to misjudge, allowing Andrew Courage all the time in the world to pick his spot and restore his teams two goal advantage.
Just two minutes later and Dufftown should have pulled another goal back. Intricate play on the edge of the Banchory box saw Kevin Smith create himself a great chance but he rather snatched at his shot and home 'keeper Sim had a comfortable save to make.
Dufftown were having their best spell of the match and were beginning to create some chances. Midfielder Peter Fraser had a fine 25 yard effort comfortably saved by home 'keeper Sim after 66 minutes.
Just a minute later and Dufftown captain Stuart Lamberton saw his 25 yard free-kick expertly tipped away from his top corner by home 'keeper Greg Sim.
The Dufftown pressure had to pay off and a second goal duly arrived after 70 minutes. The time the man who scored the first goal created the second goal. Kevin Smith did well to beat home defender Lewis Shand before drilling in a low cross that fell invitingly to defender Lee McGregor who lashed his effort into the roof of the net from close range.
Banchory were to restore their two goal advantage just 7 minutes later. Some dodgy Dufftown defending saw Philip Watson find Andrew Courage in space down the Banchory left. The substitute cut infield and squared the ball to fellow sub Stuart Skinner whose close range effort left Dufftown 'keeper Taylor with no chance.
The fifth Banchory goal was to come after 84 minutes and it was to be the goal of the match. Forward Richard Stainer picked the ball up some 20 yards out and did well to shrug off the attentions of the Dufftown defence before swivelling and unleashing a ferocious effort that flew into Taylor's top left hand corner giving the 'keeper no chance.
The eighth and final goal of the afternoon was to come for Banchory in the 88th minute. The impressive Keith Horne doing well to link up with substitute Stuart Skinner and his low shot again gave 'keeper Taylor no chance.
The final whistle was blown just a short time later and although Dufftown were comprehensivley beaten there were several positives for the management to take into the next match, the opening league game of the season against Buckie Rovers at Westburn Park on Wednesday night. |
